Rock the T Shirt

Irma, the artist behind Imy the Comic, is finally putting together an order for the Rock TShirt that her webcomic’s main character, Imy, wears.  The picture to the left says it all.  Drop by her webcomic if you’re interested in the shirt or just want to check out the...

1977 the Comic

I have to admit that I stay away from promoting *cough* adult webcomics that I read.  Knowing that I spend most of my time in the library, it’s kind of hard to read them.  Sometimes the librarians peek over your shoulder to see what you’re working on.  They probably wouldn’t like some of the webcomics that I read. Anyway, here’s a plug for 1977 the Comic.  It’s a borderline comic with a fair amount of skin.  Heck, one look at the header image will probably tell you that. You’ll also have to deal with the occasional peek as well.  That doesn’t bother me but I know it does with some.  The drug and alcohol references will probably set off a few folks as well.  And, considering it’s been restarted a couple of times, that may set off even more folks. So why should you read it?  Well, it’s funny.  I haven’t seen a dud comic yet.  W. Byron Wilkins, the creator, artist and writer, is fairly good with updating twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays.  I enjoy his artwork as well. Feel free to give it a try.  Just make sure you do read it in front of any...

When Spam Does Pay

I’m sure by now we’ve all seen the emails in your inbox or left as comments on your blog.  Every once in a while, folks wonder if spamming pays.  I don’t know about you but I always delete the garbage.  Every once in a while, I’ll send off a complaint email if I know it’ll get a result. Well wonder no more.  Looks like Citibank has proven once and for all that it does. 37-year-old Nigerian scammer Paul Gabriel Amos convinced Citibank officials to wire him $27 million belonging to Ethiopia.  While the FBI arrested Amos when he tried to visit Los Angeles, there’s no mention of where the money is. I have to wonder, as noted in the some of the comments within that article, if some of the bailout money give to Citibank was included within that...

Moved the Feeds Over to Feedburner

Yup, still working on changes.  There’s more coming shortly as well.  I’ve gone ahead and fixed the lists in the footer that list the latest posts as well as comments.  I’ve also added in the updated list of most read posts for 2008. If you’re reading this post via RSS, you may have noted that there’s a new URL. (Don’t worry.  The old URLs will redirect to the new one.) I’ve gone ahead and moved the RSS Feeds over to Feedburner.  I’ve done this so I can also offer subscriptions to my feeds via email as well.  Plus I can keep better track of how many folks read my site every day.  Last time I looked, the main RSS feed was getting accessed over 700 times every day. As I noted, there’s no need to change your RSS reader as the old URLs redirect to the new one.  But if you want to go ahead and make the change, the new URL is: http://feeds2.feedburner.com/DrMikesSteakDinner.  If you want to get emails when I make new posts, there’s a subscription box to the left in the sidebar.  It’ll give you a nasty looking Captcha that you have to figure out (Took me a couple of tries when I subscribed.) but the option is now available. If you have any problems, feel free to add your comment to this post or drop me an email. edit: Per a request, we now also have a Feed for...

I know nothing. Nothing!

Why didn’t they finish up the Hogan’s Heroes series?  I mean they finished M*A*S*H up and it was a war series.  I would have loved to have seen Allied tanks roll through the main gate.  I would have also loved to seen how Werner Klemperer would have played Colonel Klink discovering what had been happening under hos nose. I mean Sergeant Schultz knew. Oh well.  Just a thought.

Manual Updating Your Iphone and Ipod Touch to the latest 2.2.1 firmware

I’ve found this in a couple different places on the net but none that I saw had the complete instructions on how to do this.  So, this is my attempt to provide some decent instructions on how to update your iPod Touch or iPhone to the latest 2.2.1 firmware. If you’ve tried to do this already within iTunes, you may have noticed that the upgrade is big.  Very big.  Over 280 megs in size for me.  The annoying part about it though is my connection to Apple’s servers is less than stellar.  I was averaging a 2 hour download and, with the local library’s internet connection flaky, it kept timing out over and over again.  And again. The solution is a manual upgrade.  The problem is that some fancy Googleing doesn’t show any real documentation on the iPod or iPhone support sites over at Apple.  At least I didn’t find anything. Part 1: Grab the Goods The first part of the solution is obtaining the files.  For this, you need to figure out where the files are on the Apple servers.  The folks over at Live Crunch have provided them for us: iPhone 2G Download Firmware 2.2.1 – iPhone1,1_2.2.1_5H11_Restore.ipsw iPhone 3G Download Firmware 2.2.1 – iPhone1,2_2.2.1_5H11_Restore.ipsw iPod Touch 1G Download Firmware 2.2.1 – iPod1,1_2.2.1_5H11_Restore.ipsw iPod Touch 2G Download Firmware 2.2.1 – iPod2,1_2.2.1_5H11a_Restore.ipsw Now one of the questions I had was what version of the iPod Touch did I have?  I found out that since my model has an internal speaker, (I can hear audio when I play something if the headset isn’t plugged in) I have the iPod Touch 2G version.  If you’re lucky enough to have an iPhone, the 2G has a metal back to the case while the 3G has a plastic one. So anyway, since I’m using Firefox, all I have to do is a right click on the link followed by a “Save File As…” to save the file somewhere I can find it later.  To be honest though, I still had time out errors as before, even though not running the file through iTunes made it come down a lot faster.  Actually had to log into the server here and pull it via a get command followed up ftping the file back to the laptop.  Lots of fun. Before anyone asks, it doesn’t matter if you’re using a Mac or Windows.  The upgrade file is the same. Part 2: Do the Deed Getting the file is actually the hard part.  Doing the upgrade is fairly easy.  Connect your device to whatever computer has your affiliated copy of iTunes.  For me, it’s the laptop since I usually have both with me every day. Anyway, fire up iTunes and wait for everything to handshake. Normally to upgrade, you would click on the icon for your device followed by the Update button.  This time it’s going to be a bit different though, depending on what you’re using for a computer.  If you’re on a Windows based PC, hold down the Shift key on your keyboard while clicking on the Upgrade button.  If you’re on a Mac, you have to hold down the Option key while clicking on the Upgrade button. iTunes will then permit you to browse to the location of the downloaded file and will use that instead of downloading it from the Apple upgrade servers. This saves a lot of time as well if you’re lucky enough to have a couple of iPods. Hope this helps. 🙂 digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/Manual_Update_Your_Iphone_and_Ipod_Touch_to_the_latest_2_2_1’; edit: After writing this, I found a couple of sites that says you have to...

Free Grand Slam Breakfast at Denny’s – 2/3/2009

This just came my way.  It’s being reported that Denny’s will run a commercial during the Superbowl offering a free grand slam breakfast on February, 3rd, 2009.   Haven’t seen much in the way of sites promoting this and I’m not going to be able to watch the Superbowl tonight.  Would love to hear back from someone if they see it on television.  We actually have a Denny’s here in Charlotte.  Well one left, just north of the city. Here’s the copy: Every guest from 6AM – 2PM on Tuesday will receive 1 free Grand slam, and 1 free coupon book with 8 coupons in it. Each coupon book has 4 BOGO’s, 2- 25% off coupons, 1 coupon good for free dessert , and 1 coupon good for a free order of pancake puppies. Each Denny’s in the US received 1,000 of these coupon books to hand out to guests on Tuesday who order a free Grand Slam. Per Denny’s Corporate every store also received 500 Grand Slam rain check coupons. Denny’s has instructed each manger to hand these rain checks out good for a free Grand Slam to any guest who can’t wait. Denny’s spent 3 million on the Super Bowl ad, and tons more on a full page ad this coming Monday in USA Today. They are taking this very seriously and instructing all stores to staff as if it’s a major Holiday and for the staff to be as friendly as humanly possible. Commercial during the SuperBowl will announce this. And don’t forget that we’ll have iHop’s Free Pancake Day on the 24th as well. edit: This has now been confirmed.  A copy of the commercial is after the fold if you want to view...
