Yes, Jane, you are a Platformist

Jane Wells asks if she’s a platformist.  Well, considering that her blog will only accept comments from those who have wordpress.com accounts [I won’t remind you that Matt Mullenweg censors accounts] and she didn’t bother to mention which Movable Type designer she slighted, I guess the answer to that question is yes. edit: I’ve decided to turn off commenting on this post until she returns the favor.  I’m sure it’s just an oversight on her part and she’ll quickly fix the situation. (Can you tell I’m working on my...

Has Daria Made a Reappearance?

I’ve been reading Girls With Slingshots webcomic created by Danielle Corsetto for quite some time now. (I’ll be adding it to the links list shortly after I finish writing this.) I have to admit that I find a very striking resemblance between Daria and Clarice.  Besides them looking a like with their long red hair and glasses, they’re both quiet and have a love of books.  Granted Clarice has an interesting weekend job that may fit Jane more but it’s still close enough to make me wonder. (edit: Danielle talks about the origin of Clarice along with the first book released for this strip here.) I wonder if The Angst Guy has noticed the...

How to Solve “Invalid Update Control CTF File” Errors on AVG

I’ve been getting “Invalid Update Control CTF File” errors for quite some time whenever I try to update my local copy of AVG Free, the virus protection I use on my Windows boxes.  I finally dug around and found the solution to the problem. Some of the downloaded files are corrupt. (I actually assumed that from the error I received.  Is nice to know I was correct.) You have to go into your Windows Explorer and delete the *.ctf temp files in C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataAvg8updatedownload  Don’t delete the *.bin files as those are the ones that were compiled on previous updates. (It would be nice to see them all made into one file though.) I hope this helps someone. Update: I know I wrote this post for WinXP users but Doug notes in the comments below that Vista users can find AVG’s saved files in the C:ProgramDataavg8updatedownload...

Why I Don’t Like The Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County

Yes, that’s the Google website from here at the library.  The Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County system can’t find it.  The most popular website on the net and their system is telling me that it doesn’t exist. I’ve been complaining about their poorly setup system for over a year with no response.  In fact I’ve gotten to the point that I’ve complained about their comment form on their site and wondered why they even bother having it since no one ever answers it. It’s not just me either.  I’m sitting here with three over folks using their laptops and they get the error from time to time.  About 1 in 15 page views on average.  If I turned around I could watch those folks using the terminals hit the same problem.  If you sit here and just do CTRL-F5 refreshes on a site you’ll get it often as well. What’s even worse is they keep winning “Library of the Year” awards from librarian organizations but yet they can’t fix this issue or even acknowledge it exists. It’s really...

Upgraded to Movable Type 4.21

Just a quick mention that I’ve upgraded to Movable Type 4.21. Please let me know if I broke anything. I’ve already see one bug.  While you’re writing, the system will autosave posts for you as you write.  That’s cool and all that but after doing the save, it relocates the cursor to the beginning of the post content.  So, if you’re not paying attention, you’ll wind up with your writing in the wrong place. That really bugs me. 🙁 edit: Reported...

Anyone remember this book about blogging?

I thought I talked about it once.  I had a digital copy of it but I can’t find it.  It was like a 100 ways to be a better blogger type work with each page on a different topic.  The first one was about not blogging about your everyday life. (ie “I got up in the morning, had breakfast, etc.”) Does this ring a bell with anyone? It’s bugging me that I can’t find it. Image from...
